Twenty years prior to the events of part 38, he narrowed down the location of the vault below the Allen family's farmhouse. He killed the entire family and hid their bodies within the house's chimney, having been advised not to bury them in the farm's earthen soil by an entity using the guise of Mr. Scratch, though he did not trust this being completely. He recorded all of this within a journal that he kept.
Upon finding a book within the vault containing instructions on what invocations to read to open 'tears' between universes, he immediately begun opening several in attempts to open a gateway to the realm of the outer gods within the farm's barn. These attempts were unsuccessful because, as he later determined, the specific enunciation of the incantations had a significant effect on the location of the gateway on the other side. These failed attempts allowed in infestation of alien creatures to begin occupying the farm, and their presence drove him to spend the majority of his time in the basement in order to avoid them. Scratch, who he referred to mostly as "dream-visitor" and "nightmare-dweller" in his journal, accurately warned him about these creatures, but also appeared to be growing more impatient as 'Allen''s experimenting went on. In an entry where he describes time dilation occurring while exploring another world, he also states that they first appeared to him a year ago and that since then they have "come into focus" in his mind, and he voices suspicions that the persona and name it has given to him are nothing but a guise, a deception in order to manipulate him towards their own ends. They gave him the correct 'coordinates' to locate the god-realm, but he became suspicious that they intended to enter our world, and engineered a failsafe sigil for himself to stand upon when attempting to open the final gateway to the realm of the gods with the intention that should he step off of it, the gateway would close and his 'dream-visitor' would be trapped in a state between worlds. He recorded this plan, along with his intention to leave the farm for New York and his final observations about the nature of the portals he was opening, in a final journal entry which he left in the farmhouse basement, saying that he planned to collect them later but that if something should happen, other "followers" would undoubtedly come to the farm and that he hoped his notes would aid any of them who also "seek the eye of the gods", specifically wishing luck to his brother.
He relocated to a House on East 83rd Street and, in a secret room connected to one of the house's bedrooms, drew the failsafe sigil on the floor and attempted to open his final gateway. The entity attempted to cross through the gateway and he stepped off the sigil, causing a Forgotten One to be created. However, further unknown events led to his death, and his remains were left sealed within the room until Arthur Lester discovered them twenty years later.
